Emerald City? Not This Summer! - Saturday Snapshots

With its multitudes of evergreen trees and usually rainy climate, the city of Seattle, Washington, is nicknamed The Emerald City. But this year the green has turned yellow or brown because of drought, and much of the state has battled wildfires. According to the National Weather Service, Seattle set a new record for driest May 1 to July 31, with just 0.9 inches of precipitation.

Here are the effects of drought on my Pacific Northwest lawn, south of Seattle. Luckily, rain is forecast for this weekend. Keep your fingers crossed!

  1. Oh, I am sad that even in normally rainy places, there is drought. Let us hope the rain comes...and keeps coming!

  2. Your 2015 summer garden looks like an Aussie summer garden every year! I can feel the heat and dust and smell the baking ground from here! I hope you get some much needed rain soon.

  6. So sorry to see your sad yard this year. We can hope and pray for a wet winter and better moisture next year. Although here in NE Wyoming they are predicting a dryer, colder winter. I am not looking forward to that. We have to irrigate our lawns every year but the water bills have been horrendous this year. Here's to a better tomorrow!

  7. Update: We've had a little rain this morning. Hoorah!
We watered our front yard occasionally during the summer but let our back yard go. I hope it greens up when the winter rains return.

  8. So sad that you're having a drought. Wish we could give you some of the rain we've been having. Several cities have been evacuated because of flooding. And now we're expecting a hurricane to come through.
