Weekend Writing Warriors #4- Granny

File:Cosmopolitan.jpg
Granny Macauley wins my prize for character that was the most fun to write in BLUEBONNETS FOR ELLY. She's up for just about anything and has a zest for life. In this 8-sentence excerpt, Granny and her granddaughter Elly are celebrating at a local restaurant. Granny speaks first and places her order.

“I'd like the rib eye—well done—and a baked potato with all the fixin’s. First, please, bring me a Cosmopolitan.”
Elly stared across the table at her grandmother's sparkling eyes, placed her own order, and then asked, “A Cosmopolitan?”
“Yep. Ever since I saw those girls on Sex and the City drinking Cosmopolitans, I've wanted to try one.” She chuckled and whispered. “I have no notion what it is.”

That is a favorite scene of mine in the book! I loved how Granny enjoyed trying out new things, and I can almost hear her ordering this meal. LOL

Ordering a drink that she doesn't even know what it is? Hope she doesn't get a shock when it comes to the table. Great scene!

I like this Granny Macauley. She's not afraid to try something new. If it doesn't work out, I bet she just orders something else. I get the feeling that this could develop into a really interesting conversation.

Granny's are special and yours is a kick. My mom loved Lady Fashion so much she bought a mix and hid it in the pantry 'til Dad found it. Bye bye drinking the pink cocktail. A delightful eight. Thanks.

Thank you, Laurel-Rain. I'm so glad you enjoyed the book. Thank you for leaving reviews on Amazon and Goodreads too. That means so much.

She was a lot of fun to write.

Granny is less cautious than her granddaughter Elly.

Sounds like your mom had a Granny-like personality!

Granny sounds like so much fun, wish I was sitting there with them LOL. Great snippet!

She's got an awesome, fun personality. It's nice to find elderly characters who aren't stereotypes, but just as interesting as younger characters.

Don't drink myself, but I loved Granny's comment.

LOL, I love this woman already! I imagine she'll be even more of a good time when she's a little bit tipsy. Awesome snippet, Sandra! :)

Sex in the City AND a cosmopolitan? lol, I like the spunk and liveliness of this lady.

Sandra Nachlinger said...

I'm so glad I could give you a smile.

Sandra Nachlinger said...

I've never had a cosmo and while writing this, I started to do some research on the drink. Then it occurred to me that Granny would never have tasted one either. So I went with that.

Granny tries to stay current.
