#Snow Days - #SaturdaySnapshot & Monday Walk

Our first snowfall this winter, so I had to get out and take some pictures around my neighborhood. Click on photos for a closer look.

Our neighborhood is on a hill. These steps lead down to another subdivision.
I didn't walk down there today -- too slippery! 

Looks like I'm not the first person to be out and about.

A little maple tree in my front yard.

Our lamppost looked like a double scoop of
ice cream! All it needs is a drizzle of chocolate
syrup and a cherry on top.

Snowy Photos - #SaturdaySnapshots

Even though the Seattle area is located in the far northwest corner of the United States, our weather isn't as frigid as one would expect. However, we have had several snowfalls this winter. Here are a few photos from February 22nd. (Click on photos to enlarge.)

This snowfall was especially light and fluffy.
Flakes floated like feathers from the sky.

Lilacs outside my dining room window.
I'm looking forward to their blooms in spring.

I love the look of morning sunshine
on freshly fallen snow.

Ferries & Flurries - #SaturdaySnapshots

When the Auburn Senior Activity Center took the ferry to Vashon Island for a hike, we expected a few snowflakes mixed in with light rain. We got more than that! (Click on photos to enlarge.)

Since everyone dressed for cold and wet weather, we were comfortable and dry. The snow made our surroundings even more beautiful. 

Following our hike with a hot lunch in the town of Vashon made for a fun day. Luckily, the snow didn't stick to the roadways on the drive back home.

Coldest #Ski Trip Ever! - #SaturdaySnapshots

While looking through my scanned photos for something to post about, I came across pictures from a ski trip we took in 1990. We lived in Miami at the time, and for this trip we flew all the way across the U.S. to Oregon. I kept a journal, and I'll include a portion of that, too.

Here's Mount Hood, Oregon, as viewed from the ski lodge. 

We stayed in Timberline Lodge, pictured here. This is the most snow I've seen in my life!

Cozy inside by the huge fireplace. There are three hearths in the six-sided fireplace, and the chimney is 90 feet tall.

Beautiful hand-carved wood everywhere, like this stairway's newel post cap.

Our son had a great time snowboarding.

The parking lot had been cleared, but we had to uncover our rental car. To give you an idea of the amount of snow -- my husband is six feet tall.

Here's my journal, briefly describing the Mt. Hood portion of our trip. We stopped in Dallas on the way back to Miami to visit family. 

The Mt. Bachelor part of our trip is another story!

#Snow Day - #SaturdaySnapshots

When we moved to the Pacific Northwest, I expected lots of dark, rainy days and snowy winters - quite a contrast to my growing-up years in Texas and my time in Miami! But although there are more drizzly days in the Seattle area than I was accustomed to, snowy days are rare. Another surprise was that the snow generally doesn't stay around for long - the same as during my childhood in Dallas. Before the snow melted this past Monday, I laced up my boots, grabbed my camera, and trooped around our yard to record the beauty while it lasted. (Click on photos to enlarge.)

Here's what I saw out my front door. Although our heavy snow didn't break any branches on the birch tree, it sure was drooping.

I love the look of snow on evergreens.

Now follow me around to the back yard.

July at #MountRainier National Park - Saturday Snapshots

When my daughter-in-law asked if I'd like to drive to Mount Rainier National Park with her, her daughter, and her niece, I immediately said "yes!" Here are a few photos of our day trip. (Click on pictures to enlarge.)

Here's our first glimpse of The Mountain. It played hike and seek behind clouds all day. We wondered if it would ever completely reveal itself.

We were surprised to see snow along the Nisqually Vista Trail. 

The views of the Nisqually Glacier and valley below from trail overlooks were breathtaking (and a little scary!)

This quote is engraved into the steps leading to hiking trails at the Paradise visitor area. (That's my granddaughter.)

Lots of other people decided to visit the park on Wednesday. The visitor center parking lot was full, and the overflow lot was more than halfway full. 

This beautiful waterfall rushed beneath a bridge on the Myrtle Falls trail. Mount Rainier is still hiding behind clouds in the background.

The trail was steep and little girls can get tired.

But we were finally rewarded with Mount Rainier putting in an appearance. I overheard someone say they'd been in the park for three days and that was the first time they'd seen The Mountain.
