LaConner Crab Cruise - #Photos

A great day to cruise on Skagit Bay! Add in a lunch of Dungeness crab, good company, and lots of sunshine, and it was a day to enjoy. Here's how the senior center brochure described the outing:
We will travel north to La Conner and board the Viking Star for a 2.5-hour cruise along the Swinomish Channel out to Deception Pass. The highlight of the day will be the cracked crab feast onboard as we ply the waters out to Deception Pass Bridge.
(Click on photos for a closer look.)

The town of La Conner, Washington, sits on Skagit Bay
in northwestern Washington State. Our vessel was the M/V Chinook.

We passed vacation homes and permanent residences perched along the shore.

Rafts of logs floated near rocky, wooded islands

Our destination: Deception Pass Bridge
Snow-capped Cascade Mountains on the horizon
After our cruise ended, we headed for the tulip fields of Mt. Vernon... but that's a story for another post.

Curious about Deception Pass's name? Wikipedia says:
"[Explorer] George Vancouver gave it the name 'Deception' because it had misled him into thinking Whidbey Island was a peninsula. The 'deception' was heightened due to Whidbey's failure to find the strait at first."

  1. This looks so calm and tranquil. I loved joining you for your cruise at Skagit Bay. I would be happy with the crab fest too!
I hope your family had a wonderful Songkran holiday in Thailand - Glad you enjoyed seeing some photos on my blog, lovely to have your visit!

  2. Oh, the tranquility! Unless of course you are a crab :( :( Thanks for sharing, Sandra!

  3. What a beautiful day for a cruise! And what a beautiful place you traveled through. Thank you for sharing this lovely trip with us.

  4. Gorgeous scenes! I have visited parts of Washington, mostly near Seattle and one of the islands, but you have so many beautiful places I would love to explore. Thanks for sharing.

  5. LaConner is such a fun place. They also were known for having a good high school basketball team--Darrington's arch rival decades ago. Deception Pass is a favorite place for me. Our church youth camp was at the group camp on Cornet Bay and I counseled there for several years. Such a gorgeous place!

  6. The LaConner trip was lots of fun. Next time, though, I hope to visit the quilt museum. I've heard it's fabulous.

  7. Looks like it was a beautiful day in the neighborhood! Lovely photos bring it all up close and personal. You have a gift for that. Also, I'm glad to know how Deception Pass got its name (:

  8. La Conner is such a quaint spot. I've been there are few times, and through the channel a few more when we had our boat in Bellingham. A fresh crab feast sounds wonderful! - Margy

  9. So very nice. Looks like a wonderful day. Very beautiful and calm water. Thanks for sharing with us.

  10. Thanks for sharing this nice cursing. It looks so relaxing that I can almost feel the comfortable breeze in the sunshine.

  11. Looks like a lovely trip!.
Thanks for linking up with this week's photo party at

  12. What a fun ride it must have been. Is that where Bill Gates has his home?

  13. Wow, what an amazing trip!! Your pictures are gorgeous, as always, and make me want to visit! I love the houses on the rocky coast along the water.

When we visited northern CA and southern OR, my younger son was SO excited to have Dungeness Crab right from the source...and we arrived the week after the season ended - he was so disappointed!

Can't wait to see your pics of the tulip fields! We saw loads of beautiful tulips planted all over Monticello (Thomas Jefferson's house).

  14. Oh my gosh I would so have been on that excursion if I’d been there! (Actually, the mention of Dungeness crab tempted me to fly home right this minute)! We’re from Oregon, spending winter/spring here in Florida....I like it here, but there are no other crabs as good as the ones from our Pacific Coast! .... Beautiful water, beautiful day ...I enjoyed reading about your day trip very much, even if it did make me a bit homesick for the PNW!

  15. Hello,
What a wonderful cruise. Hubby and I have hiked to the Deception Pass bridge, it is a beautiful area. I love Washington State. The crabs sound yummy too. Have a happy day!
