Cinque Terre, Italy - Saturday Snapshot

Here are the last few photos from the Cinque Terre, Italy (2001). Today I'm featuring pictures from Riomaggiori, the easternmost town of the group.

Riomaggiori, as viewed from the water taxi. Online sources say the town dates from the 13th century.
A closer view. Instead of rows of parked cars, the main thoroughfare
in Riomaggiori is lined with fishing boats.
I included this photo to show the terraced grapevines above the Cinque Terre towns.
They're accessed by foot paths and tiny cable cars just big enough to hold one person.
Thank you for allowing me to revisit the Cinque Terre over the past few weeks.

  1. That place looks awesome. The grape vines probably help with erosion. I love how there are boats instead of cars parked in the street.

    1. I loved that too. Although things may have changed in the nine years since we visited this area, in 2005 the Cinque Terre had few cars and trucks and was generally accessed by train or boat.

  5. I will probably never get to see Italy in person, but love your photos. A sort of armchair adventure. And I started reading Beautiful Ruins because of your recommendation. I am enjoying it.

  8. What impressive towns. They seem to grow from the hillsides! I love learning that there are one-person cable cars to access the grape-growing terraces.

    1. I called them cable cars because I didn't know of any other way to describe them! They were basically just a box on a track, hardly big enough for a person to perch on.

  10. It does look a wonderful place. I don't know why, but the middle shot made me think of jigsaws. I think it is the mixture of boats and colourful buildings.
