Saturday Snapshots - Pub Signs

In August 1999, my husband and I rented a flat in London for two weeks and used it as our home base to explore the city and surrounding countryside. Our BritRail passes definitely got a workout, and we had a great time!

Here are a few photos I took of the more interesting pub signs we came across on that vacation. We didn't sample beer or ale in every single pub, but we did hit a few! (Click on pictures to enlarge.)

Love the little piggy perched on the ledge of The Flying Pig.
The sign over the Bag O' Nails reminds me of Jack Sparrow!
Must be the braids in his beard.
The White Swan presented a more dignified entrance.
And Fuller's Ale & Pie House invited us in for "Sanctuary"

  1. I did a similar post last year after a trip to London- we didn't pick any of the same pubs though- there's an endless number of course.

    1. I found your pub signs post on your blog and enjoyed looking at your photos. You're right -- we didn't pick the same pubs. The selection is definitely endless! My photos were taken with a film camera and then scanned. I can sure tell the difference in the sharpness of your pictures as compared to mine. Yours are so much clearer. Photography has come a long way, hasn't it?

    1. We had a lot of fun searching for quirky pub signs -- and tasting a pint of two!

  3. I think I would have stopped in at least a few of these for a quick pint or two if I didn't have to drive.

    1. We were either on foot or traveling via the Tube or train on this trip. We enjoyed not having to worry about finding parking for a car, and I think we saw more on foot than we would have speeding by in a vehicle.

  5. Oh, what a fun adventure! I think staying in one place for a week or so gives one more of an opportunity to explore. Of course, when you do that, you risk falling in love with the place and staying on. That happened to my eldest son, who has lived in various parts of Europe since the mid-nineties, starting in London!

Thanks for sharing....and I LOVE those pub signs. Want to try the pubs, too.

    1. Seems like most of our vacations involve moving from place to place almost every night -- and that's okay. But I really enjoyed staying in one place and having a home base during our London trip. That gave us more time to focus on the surrounding area, rather than spending time en route to another place. The transportation system was well organized, and we had no trouble getting around without a car -- something that would be just about impossible in most of the U.S.

  7. Ohmigoodness, a Brownie camera. I took my first pictures on a Brownie. (suddenly feeling old). My family went to England to visit one of my uncles in 1971. Would ADORE going back. Would definitely do the BritRail thing as well, as I don't think I could adapt to driving on the left side of the road.

Wonderful snaps, Sandra! I really admire folks who can take great photographs. My hands shake too much most of the time.

    1. I searched online for this Brownie camera photo (thank you, Wikipedia!) because I had one just like it long ago.
BritRail worked out beautifully for us because the transportation system was so well organized. The Tube linked up to trains which linked up to buses wherever we wanted to go. After a trip to Jamaica, we learned that driving on the left-hand side of the road freaked us out -- we just couldn't do it!

  8. Great idea for a photo theme -- I'll try to remember that when I'm in England later this year.

  11. These are beautiful photos. The next time I go to London I'd like to do just that, rent a flat and stay longer rather than a few days in a hotel. Thanks for sharing your experience.

    1. I'm glad you enjoyed my photos. The flat worked out very well for us. It was comfortable and even had a clothes washer/dryer. I'd rent it again in a heartbeat!
