Mountains, River, Monte Cristo, & Emu - #SaturdaySnapshots

Thermal undies? Check
Wool socks? Check
Warm gloves? Check

Although the morning started with a dusting of snow, that didn't deter our hearty group of walkers! We're off to the Foothills Trail in Orting, Washington. This trail is shared by bicyclists, moms with baby strollers, roller-bladers, kids on tricycles, and walkers like us. (Click on photos to enlarge.)

This was an easy in-and-out walk. We followed the paved path for about 1.5 miles, then turned around and returned to where we started.

Recent heavy rain has resulted in landslides, including these two along the river.

Part of the path veered away from the river and skirted farmland...

... and marshes.

Emu or ostrich? Opinions varied, but we were surprised to be greeted by this big bird.

Back in downtown Orting for lunch. I had a Monte Cristo sandwich and outrageously yummy fries.

Unfortunately, Mount Rainier hid behind clouds all day. If we'd come on a clear day, we would have seen this breath-taking view from the trail.

This flat, paved path allowed for conversation between walkers while getting a little exercise.  Fun!

  1. This is one of my favorite trails. It's paved and flat and not too long!

    1. I agree. I enjoyed the trail because it was easy to talk to other walkers and get to know them better. That isn't always possible on our strenuous hikes where we're walking single file... and huffing and puffing!

  2. Oh my! You went hiking...after...a...snowfall? I'm so amazed!

    1. It wasn't much of a snowfall... just a dusting that melted quickly. The senior center leaders won't take us on risky hikes or walks.

  3. I always go hiking with just my husband, and we prefer the inclined and rocky paths. ;-) My least favorite are the ones with lots of insects or mud. No matter what, Monte Cristo sandwiches are a great reward!

You got me curious about the difference between emu and ostrich. From your photo, my instinct was to say emu. When I googled the differences, I ended up confused. Seems as if the main differences are heights and number of toes.

    1. I guess we should have examined its toes! Regardless, the last thing we expected to see on our walk was an emu or an ostrich.
Thanks for stopping by my blog today.

  4. I've never really been able to tell the difference between an Emu and an Ostrich.... but you're right- in the moment it's better to just appreciate the bird rather than waste time identifying it!
